Focus on Development

U19Player development, technically, mentally and physically, comes from experienced coaching, a stable environment and a progressive soccer program. Development of players, including winning, must be age-appropriate, and handled correctly, but has very little to do with a club's League format. It is a balance between a player's family time and time on the field, which cannot be effective without respect for both. We all have a responsibility to help players improve, and as coaches, a responsibility to deliver.

The coaching staff at SC Athletic is multi-cultural; a combination of State licensed coaches and educators, former professionals, current College players and individuals with overseas experience. Player development is driven by coaches with the soccer knowledge and life skills to know what is needed at all levels, and we have that.

High School soccer, with it's differing playing environment, large fan bases, close media coverage, and a responsibility to represent communities and produce results, prepares players for the rigors of College and Professional life, and we have coaching representation at four High Schools.

We believe coaching and facilities are key, and the rest will follow, and with exclusive rights to seven area fields, we have the room to help players grow. For more on our philosophy, go to About SCA.

Best Ever League Results!

Game Play at MVHSNovember 21, 2011 – Since we started to build the club some six years ago, SC Athletic teams have had our best ever season in the Coast Soccer League. With three League Champions, and four more teams in the top three, over half the club is in a position for promotion!

Congratulations to:

  • The GU13 team who in their first season in Club soccer blew the competition away.
  • The BU9 team who closed out their League season yesterday as Champions.
  • The BU13 team who tied up the League some weeks ago but it was official yesterday.

This has been an incredible year for the club so far and is testimony to the dedication of the players, support of the parents and all the hard work put in by the coaches.

To back that up we also had four teams in the top three in the League: BU10B, BU10S, BU11 and BU16. The BU18 team is playing up in age going through to the Sweet Sixteen U19 League Cup, and we still have younger teams playing.

Now that the League season is over, preparation for State Cup is imminent and another challenge is on our doorstep. There could be some question that the League did not have the best competition but State Cup will answer that, and the way our teams have performed it would have had little impact.

Again congratulations to all our champions!!!

2011 England Travel Team Returns

England Travel Team

August 29, 2011 – “YOU WILL NEVER WALK ALONE”
The Club sent a representative team to Manchester, England for the second season, and with the exception of possible hurricane delays, the tour went very well. We flew from Orange County to Manchester and were out of the country for ten days. Although the tour is focused on soccer playing, training, and watching the best in the world, there was some time for sightseeing and even a round of golf.

The team stayed at Worsley Park which is five star, and the place of choice for many EPL teams when playing in Manchester. There we were privileged to meet the Man City and Arsenal first teams. The players graciously spent time with the boys signing autographs and taking pictures. To meet world class players first hand and then watch them perform was truly special. The group attended three EPL games: Man City/ Bolton, Man United/Tottenham and Liverpool/Bolton. Roger Snrs connections in England paid dividends with the ticketing and transportation.

On the playing field we matched up against three local club teams and three English Schools FA representative teams, giving us access to some top quality fields, excellent referees and warm hospitality which made us all understand how it should be done. The games were very intense but played in the spirit of the game, and with only one yellow card the whole trip, it was again a great learning experience to watch how a top referee deals with conflicts. The boys also matched up against players who have already signed with youth Academies and felt the difference in playing knowledge and game smarts. We had pro scouts at our games from Liverpool, Bolton, and Oldham, and they all said the same: we are definitely closing the gap. The training sessions were conducted at the original Manchester United facilities, The Cliff, where we played Salford on a full size indoor field. We also had a morning with the Man City Academy staff at their main training facility and trained alongside their Academy teams from U8 to an inter squad game between Man City and Burnley BU16. The head of their Academy paid us compliments on how disciplined we were as a group and again how much progress we have made.

In summary it was a trip for the serious player – the game schedule was grueling, and there were some defining moments for the team – but we found out that the English food is not that bad. The club will send a representative team every year as it is a top quality football experience both on and off the field. The accompanying parents were fantastic in their support of this project and kept the boys in line, including curfew, so allowing the coaches to concentrate on getting the boys prepared for the games and training.

Bringing Home the Gold from Copa del Mar

August 1, 2011 – The club started its tournament season competing in the Copa Del Mar tournament in San Diego with great success both on and off the field. The BU10, BU13, GU13, BU15, BU16, BU17 teams all got to the finals with the BU10, GU13, and the BU16 bringing home the gold.

In the Finals:
The BU13 had a very tough game with the San Diego SC Elite and were defeated 3-1 by a very physical team. The BU15 were defeated 1-0 by a strong Exiles team who will be competing in Gold this season. BU17 also had a tough final game against the Aztecs Premier team, and found themselves up against some home town officiating. Although the losses were a disappointment, the level of competition was outstanding.

Bringing Home the Gold:
The BU10 team came out Champions, prevailing over the Del Mar Sharks Gold team 2-1 in a barn stormer, with some fantastic support from the other teams that were playing at that venue. The GU13 team brought home the Gold and almost won it outright, but a breakaway in the dying seconds did not go our way. However, the Girls did not lose faith, and completed the job from the penalty spot. The BU16 team showed their true ability against a UFC team that was destined for Premier. We were leading 2-1 until the final seconds when UFC completed a set play. The boys outplayed the team from UFC and completed the job in clinical fashion from the penalty spot.

We had other results that were close and overall the weekend was a success. The clubwide evening meal was well attended, and it was a beautiful sight to see all the boys and girls getting together away from the soccer field and the parents having an opportunity to meet the coaching staff in a social setting.

Go SC !!!!!!

Status of New Fields

Aliso Viejo FieldApril 2011 – Congratulations and thank you to all who have contributed towards the renovation of the field at Aliso Viejo. Our efforts have been so successful that we have been approved to take over the other two fields for our upcoming season.

I will be starting renovation on the two new fields this weekend as they are in bad shape due to lack of maintenance and care by the previous club. It is a great step forward and gives us a lot of flexibility for training and games. We will be rounding up the "field troops" again before the start of the season so keep those backs in good shape !!!

Update: July 16, 2011 – Field Cleanup Day was a huge success. We made a tremendous amount of progress cleaning out trash and weeds, and trimming the fence line. Thank you to all our volunteers!

"On the relationship between star players and the teams they belong to: Members of a team can only be as good as the joint efforts of their team. You will always shine brighter as a team player."
